|

Beside CIFS and NFS (and optionally OpenLDAP), which servers are essential for a NAS? I assume it is safe to drop all mail-related servers, but is it also safe to drop httpd, mysqld, and squid? I want to build a NAS box just for file sharing in a Windows-centric network (in which there also is a single Linux desktop and several OpenELEC boxes, thus the need for NFS), and the only specifications are that (A) firstly, it handles RAID arrays to the extent that you can transfer to it a degraded array from your QNAP/Synology/Thecus box, and (B) secondly, that it implements Samba 4 AD as good as currently possible. |

Instead of searching for dependencies, why won't you just disable the services you don't need...
A disabled service just consumes disk space and not system resources...
A full blown SMS install is under 3GB (~2,6GB) so space ain't the trouble.
To see what services running do from a terminal
and stop and disable with
Code: | smsconfig [service] stop
smsconfig [service] off |
Mail server consumes the most though and especially clamav so by just disabling clamav or all the mail server you save a lot of resources, and if you need basic local mail you can switch to sendmail...

Running as NAS only, you need Samba and NFS and if you have Macs the netatalk (AFP) and might need a minimal mail server to notify you in a RAID degrade situation.
mysql and squid are not of any use, if you want an http server you can use nginx as well, although httpd ain't that hungry in SMS as in other distros.
I use SMS to recover degraded arrays, so you will have to problem with that, if you have knowledge about RAID recovery and mdadm usage...
For samba 4 domain controller follow the instructions at
http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba_AD_DC_HOWTO
and use bind9 for DNS and enable heimdal, although the how to is missing a few things will get you started...
I have in my plans to create a tutorial for samba 4 AD DC, when I find the time...
