Dear gerasimos,

still many months I did not have time enough to continue the test I started (may be did you remember the man who used a small e-box 4864 fanless computer as server with an external USB HDD which stay in error mode due to the fact I installed it without KBD, Mouse and display) Wink

Now I came back from USA where I meet somebody showing me the Raspberry Pi. When I saw it I directly though to your SMS and recommended it to him.

As you will see here below I presume you could create a special image of your SMS to be able to install it on an external HDD or SD card that could be used with the Raspberry Pi.

As SMS is a server for me an image of SMS for the B version (with ethernet and USB) of Raspberry Pi must only be done (and not for the A version (without etherrnet)).

P.S. ; I consider it will be necessary to be able to install SMS on a connected external HDD or SD card (http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setup) that could later be connected to the "Server Hardware" (like my e-box 4864 (fanless thin client) or Raspberry Pi).

I was quite anxious to start creating an arm version with RPi, but to tell you the truth, I get disappointed, frustrated and little bit angry.

The availability was none for months the price was 3 times up and if you consider the problematic ethernet cards on first PCBs, well that was enough, to just forget it, until you bring it up.

I'll check what the chances are to get a RPi board in my hands a year later, but if the situations are the same, I would rather prefer to support another PCB.

I respect what you mean. It was just a suggestion due to those specific ideas I now explain.

As I am using a router on which I installed OpenWRT I could use this router as a server for many aspects where the existing hardware specifications are enough to support what I need.

But, because there are always new needs, if I want to use new aspects or unsupported needs on the existing installed distribution on my router I though to use an external small server.

For that reason I previously though to use the fanless thin computer e-box 4864 I boought some years ago even if I previously (at least one year ago) encounter an installation problem on the external HDD (due to the fact this thin computer does not have any installed internal HDD).

And as explained I just saw the RPi and just realized that somebody already installed a slckware version on it. Then I though it could be interesting for you (and of course us) to have a SMS version available on this PCB.

Why did I now though to use this PCB in place of my already bought thin computer ?
Simply because I though we could also run a slackware based distribution (thinking to SMS) on it but principaly because we could also simply connect this PCB on USB (as power supply) and an external USB HDD (to use it as a all in one server version.

It means that for all people who buy a router with at least one USB port it could be possible to have the cheaper way to have a server where the (I though) RPi could be power supplied by the router with an integrated server (SMS running on the connected PCB). Then a small greenIT router/full functionnality server solution. A dream Wink

I also though to replace my thin fanless computer with this OLIMLEX PCB https://www.olimex.com/Products/OLinuXino/iMX233/ because we could use interesting aspect of its specifications but it will need to connect it to the 110/220V power supply and SMS could not be installed on it. Then it is why I forgot it and though to RPi.

But as explained I respect your advice and I just gave it as idea.

Because I stay concerned by a SMS (Superb Mini Server) on a low power consumption board.
As they installed a Slackware based distribution (http://rpi.fatdog.eu/) on a Raspberry Pi (ARM) I am sure you could integrate SMS in the BerryBoot distribution list (http://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot) as the better Superb Mini Server that could run on this kind of board.
It could be better that a simple BerryWebServer (that is only a web server on this board).

Thanks for the links, I found cubieboard a better choice indeed, that SATA port makes the difference.
I'll look at it in the future, although might take a while before an arm version come out, since my time is already full of things to do...

ok, no problem. I am also too short in time even to try again installing SMS on my external USB HDD to connect it to my fanless small server (e-box 4864) I talked to you before.

But as this cubieboard could have a SATA HDD and a lot of GPIO I consider this could become a server that could also automate so many external (Arduino, Home Automation, ...) stuff that I tought SMS could stay the perfect server for everyone.

Just for information it is really difficult to buy this cubieboard. So many people like it and buy it. Then it is currently available on this website I found it for 65 USD : https://www.miniand.com/products/Cubieboard%20Developer%20Board#buy

I just read now that (Amlogic 8726-MX) A9 is 4X faster than the A10 (existing on the Cubieboard).

Then I presume it could be consider to prefer use the SMS on this Amlogic 8726-MX like on this one that could become a really cheap and energy interesting small home server :
